Word Scramble: rules and scoring

Reorder the displayed letters mentally and type the original English word, then submit. Letter case and spaces at either end are ignored. Technology, animals, food, nature and sports use fixed included lists. A game selects 10 words; changing the interface language does not translate them.

Easy gives 45 seconds per word and favours lengths ≤6, medium gives 30 seconds and favours 7 letters, hard gives 20 seconds and favours lengths ≥8. The pool takes the 10 closest entries to the selected length band, filling a thin band with neighbouring lengths. Correct answers earn 2 points with more than 15 seconds left and no hint, otherwise 1; the maximum is 20.

Limits and saved records

A hint shows only the first letter and caps a correct answer at 1 point. A wrong submission, Skip or time expiry reveals the word for 0 points. Feedback then advances once; controls wait until the next word. These browser timer ticks are a game aid, not a precision timing instrument, especially in an inactive tab.

The high score is local to this browser when storage is available. Blocked or malformed storage does not stop the game; new records may remain only in memory. Words can repeat between games, and a shuffle may occasionally leave a word unchanged. The included lists are limited English vocabulary, not a complete dictionary or a language-level assessment; random selection need not be evenly distributed.

  • Look for common letter patterns and try grouping vowels and consonants.
  • Use every displayed letter and the selected category. The game accepts the selected original word, not every possible anagram.

If something seems wrong

My answer was not accepted or the controls are waiting.
Use the original English word with every letter; case and outer spaces do not matter. An incorrect submission ends that word. During feedback, wait for the next round rather than submitting or skipping again.
The timer or saved score seems different.
Inactive tabs can delay browser timers. This score uses the displayed remaining ticks, not an official elapsed time. Records may be unavailable in private mode or after browser storage was cleared.

How to use

1

Choose a category and difficulty, then start the 10-word game.

2

Study the shuffled letters and type the original English word; use the category and letter patterns.

3

Submit once. Case and outer spaces are ignored; feedback reveals whether the answer matched.

4

If stuck, reveal the first letter or skip. A hint limits a correct answer to 1 point; a skip, wrong answer or expiry earns 0.

5

Wait for the next word. Correct answers with more than 15 seconds and no hint earn 2 points; other correct answers earn 1. After 10 rounds, play again or change category.

Frequently Asked Questions

They are fixed English word lists included in this game, across five categories. The page language does not change them. No complete or named external dictionary is supplied, and alternative anagrams are not automatically accepted.

The hint shows the first letter of the original word, not a definition or movable tile. A correct answer after using it earns 1 point regardless of remaining time.

Easy: 45 seconds, medium: 30, hard: 20 per word. A correct answer earns 2 points only with more than 15 displayed seconds remaining and no hint; otherwise 1. Ten words give a maximum of 20 points.

Yes. Skip or expiry reveals the word and gives 0 points, then moves once to the next round after feedback. A wrong submission also ends the word; the controls resume with the next word.
