About Reading Time Calculator

This reading time calculator counts the words in whatever you paste, divides that count by a reading speed in words per minute, and rounds the result up to the next whole minute. Words are split on spaces and line breaks, characters include spaces, sentences are split on periods, question marks and exclamation marks, and paragraphs on blank lines. Four presets set the speed — Slow (150), Average (200), Fast (250) and Very fast (300) — and the WPM box beside them takes an exact figure from 50 to 1000.

Three fixed clocks run next to the reading estimate: speaking time at 130 WPM for a presentation pace, handwriting time at 13 WPM and typing time at 40 WPM. The Readability analysis panel adds the Flesch Reading Ease score, computed as 206.835 minus 1.015 times the average sentence length minus 84.6 times the syllables per word, with the matching reading level, average word length, average sentence length, unique word count, and equivalents in A4 pages (250 words), book pages (300 words), blog posts (1,000 words) and tweets (280 characters).

For a reference point, Marc Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis in the Journal of Memory and Language, pooling 190 studies and 18,573 readers, puts adult silent reading of English non-fiction at 238 words per minute and fiction at 260, with oral reading at 183. The 200 WPM default is deliberately cautious; raise it when your audience is fluent and the material familiar.

The limits are worth knowing. Word counting is whitespace-based, so Chinese, Japanese or Korean text written without spaces registers as a single word — read the character count instead. Every period ends a sentence, so “Dr.” and “a.m.” inflate the sentence count and distort the Flesch score, and the syllable counter only handles the Latin alphabet, which makes the readability panel meaningful for English. Nothing leaves your device: the whole calculation runs in the browser.

Pro Tips

  • The four presets only move the reading clock. Speaking, handwriting and typing stay pinned at 130, 13 and 40 WPM, so switching from Average to Very fast never changes those three cards.
  • Clear the WPM box or type 0 and the calculator silently falls back to 200 WPM — 400 words still shows 2 min. Type the speed you want rather than emptying the field.
  • Times are rounded up, not to the nearest minute: 1,000 words at 300 WPM is 3.3 minutes and displays as 4 min. Anything under a full minute shows as “< 1 min” rather than a decimal.
  • Readability analysis is collapsed by default and only appears once the text has at least one word. Open it for the Flesch score, unique word count and the A4 page, book page, blog post and tweet equivalents.
  • The Paste button shows only when the browser exposes clipboard read access. If it is missing, or you see “Clipboard access blocked”, click into the text box and press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on macOS).

Troubleshooting

Problem:

The Paste button is missing, or clicking it shows “Clipboard access blocked - paste with Ctrl+V”.

Solution:

The browser refused clipboard read permission, which the button needs. Click inside the text box and press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on macOS), or allow clipboard access for this site in the address-bar permissions menu and reload.

Problem:

Chinese, Japanese or Korean text shows 1 word and “< 1 min”, however long the passage is.

Solution:

Words are counted by splitting on spaces, and those scripts do not use them. Use the Characters tile instead — a 42-character Chinese paragraph reports 42 characters correctly — and divide by your own characters-per-minute rate.

Problem:

Changing the WPM box does not shorten the estimate the way you expect.

Solution:

An empty box or a 0 makes the calculator fall back to 200 WPM, so 400 words keeps showing 2 min. Type a number between 50 and 1000. Remember the result is also rounded up, so 1,000 words at 250 and at 300 WPM both land on 4 min.

Problem:

The Sentences tile is much higher than the number of sentences you actually wrote.

Solution:

Sentences are split on every period, question mark and exclamation mark, so abbreviations count as endings: “Dr. Smith met Mr. Jones at 9 a.m. They talked.” is 10 words but reports 5 sentences. That also lowers the average sentence length and pushes the Flesch score up.

Open Readability analysis and read the Content equivalent list. It converts your words into A4 pages at 250 words per page, book pages at 300 words per page, blog posts at 1,000 words, and tweets at 280 characters. A 1,000-word article of 5,806 characters shows as 4.0 A4 pages, 3.3 book pages, 1.0 blog post and 21 tweets; the tweet figure follows the character total, so it moves when your words are longer.

Delete words and watch the counters, which update on every keystroke: cutting a draft from 1,500 words to 1,000 moves the estimate from 8 min to 5 min at 200 WPM. Raising the WPM box shortens the displayed figure too, but that only changes the assumption about the reader, not the text, so use it to model an audience rather than to flatter a draft.

Because each platform hard-codes its own words-per-minute assumption, and some add a fixed number of seconds per image. This page does neither: it divides words by the speed you choose and ignores pictures entirely. If you want the two numbers to agree, find the WPM your platform uses and type it into the WPM box before you copy the estimate across.
