Convert BMP to JPEG, then inspect the resulting preview and file size before downloading.

Method

The browser decodes the input and redraws its still image at the same dimensions. The browser decodes BMP and composites the pixels over white before JPEG encoding; JPEG has no transparency and uses lossy compression. Canvas output must match the requested MIME type and file signature; an unavailable encoder produces an error rather than a differently encoded download.

The export is one still image: the default image, or the first frame if there is no default. The source preview may animate.

The conversion control processes the selected image in this browser without an upload or storage request. This describes the converter, not every feature of the page.

Example

A 3 × 2 BMP → a 3 × 2 JPEG at quality 92; compare colours with lossy tolerance.

Universal Image Converter

How to use

1

Drop a .bmp file onto the Drop your image here area, or click it to pick a bitmap from your computer.

2

Set the Quality slider that appears under the preview anywhere between 10% and 100%; it starts at 92%.

3

Click Convert to JPG; transparent or empty areas are filled with white before the picture is encoded as JPEG.

4

Check New file size in the Conversion complete! panel, then lower the quality and convert again if the JPG is still too heavy.

5

Click Download JPG to save the photo, or Convert Another to reset the tool for the next bitmap.

6

Drop a BMP file into the selection area, or click it to choose one from your device.

7

Check the preview, file name and original size. Remove the image if you selected the wrong file.

8

Set Quality between 10 and 100 (initially 92). Higher values do not guarantee identical pixels or a smaller file.

9

Click Convert to JPEG and wait for the result or an error before downloading.

10

Inspect the converted preview and compare its new size with the original; a smaller file is not guaranteed.

11

Click Download JPEG to save the current result. Convert Another clears the result for a new image.

Pro Tips

  • Drag and drop multiple BMP files at once to convert them in batch — save time on large projects.
  • For web use, JPG offers excellent compression for photographs, striking a balance between file size and quality with an adjustable quality slider.
  • All conversions happen in your browser — your images are never uploaded to a server, guaranteeing privacy.
  • Need transparency? JPG does not support transparency. If your BMP has transparent pixels, they will be filled with a solid background color (usually white). Convert to PNG or WebP if you need to keep transparency.
  • After converting, use our image compressor or resizer to further optimize your JPG files for the web.
  • Compare row order on narrow bitmaps, and inspect edges after JPEG compression.
  • Compare both the appearance and byte size; keep your original file for later edits.

Use Cases

  • Prepare a JPEG copy of a bitmap for a JPEG-only destination.

Troubleshooting

Problem:

No usable preview appears.

Solution:

Check the actual file format and try another file. The browser may not decode this variant, even if its extension is listed.

Problem:

The requested export fails.

Solution:

Try PNG in the general Image Converter, or another target supported there. Reduce dimensions if memory is insufficient; do not rename another format.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, 100% free with no limits, no ads on the conversion itself, no registration, and no watermarks on your output. You can convert as many BMP files to JPG as you want.

No. Conversion runs entirely in your web browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your BMP files never leave your device, ensuring 100% privacy and GDPR compliance.

JPG is a lossy format, so some quality loss is inevitable. Our tool uses a high default quality (~92) to minimize visible artifacts. If your original is a photograph, the loss is usually imperceptible.

There is no hard limit imposed by the tool, but very large files (over ~100 MB) may be slow on low-memory devices. For best results, we recommend files under 50 MB.

Yes. The BMP to JPG converter is fully responsive and works on iOS Safari, Android Chrome, and all modern mobile browsers. Just tap to select a file and download the converted image.

Yes. You can drag and drop multiple BMP files or select several at once, and each will be converted to JPG individually so you can download them.

When the browser decodes alpha, it is composited over white for JPEG. JPEG cannot retain transparent pixels.

Try a higher quality and compare the preview; use PNG if preserving decoded pixel detail matters more than JPEG compatibility.
