What you get is an exact pixel copy of the frame that was drawn, usually a little larger than the GIF, since GIF squeezes an image into at most 256 colours while PNG keeps full 24-bit colour plus 8-bit alpha. Converting a 200 x 200 GIF of 1.32 KB produced a 2.15 KB PNG in that test.
Transparency survives. GIF stores one fully transparent palette index; PNG stores an alpha value per pixel, so a transparent GIF background comes through as a transparent PNG background with no white box behind it. The download keeps your original file name with the extension changed to .png.
The limit to know: an animated GIF loses its animation. PNG has no frame sequence, so the converter writes one still frame. If you need every frame as its own file, or a moving image, this is not the tool — use a frame extractor, or keep the GIF.

- The downloaded file keeps your original name with a new extension: banner.gif becomes banner.png, which matters if a stylesheet or template already refers to the base name.
- Check the New size line before downloading. A PNG that is several times larger than the GIF usually means the source was a photo, which PNG cannot compress the way JPEG can.
- If the GIF is animated, look at the preview under the result: it is a single frame. Convert the GIF only when a still is what you actually want.
