About SQL Formatter

The SQL Formatter breaks a one-line query into readable form: SELECT, FROM, WHERE, JOIN, GROUP BY, HAVING, ORDER BY, LIMIT and UNION each begin a new line, AND, OR and ON are indented beneath them, and the select list is split one column per line at 2 or 4 spaces. Keywords can be uppercased, and a minify mode strips line and block comments and collapses the query back to one line. Formatting runs in your browser, and the output copies or downloads as query.sql.

Use Cases

Developers and QA engineers inspecting, validating, or transforming data using the SQL Formatter.
DevOps practitioners debugging configuration files, tokens, or API responses on the fly.
Students learning web development, data formats, or encoding schemes with a hands-on SQL Formatter.
Technical writers preparing code samples, configuration examples, or documentation assets.
Security researchers and bug bounty hunters who need a quick sandbox without CLI access.

How to use

1

Paste your SQL query into the SQL Input box, or press the clipboard button to load a sample SELECT with joins, grouping and ordering.

2

Tick Uppercase Keywords to force SELECT, FROM, JOIN and WHERE into capitals, or untick it to leave your original casing alone.

3

Pick an indent width of 2 or 4 spaces using the two buttons beside the Indent label.

4

Click Format to break the query onto one line per clause with indented columns and conditions, or click Minify to strip comments and collapse it to a single line.

5

Read the result in the Formatted Output panel, which also reports the line count.

6

Click Copy to put the formatted SQL on your clipboard, or Download to save it as query.sql.

Pro Tips

  • Paste your content directly — the SQL Formatter detects common input patterns and applies sensible defaults automatically.
  • Use keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl/Cmd+A to select all, Ctrl/Cmd+C to copy) to speed up your workflow inside the SQL Formatter.
  • For very large inputs, break them into chunks — most browser tabs can handle megabytes of text, but parsing huge payloads may freeze the UI briefly.
  • The SQL Formatter does not log or store your input. If you need history, copy important outputs to a local file or note app.
  • Combine the SQL Formatter with other tools on this site (formatters, converters, encoders) to build complete data pipelines without leaving your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Outputs generated with the SQL Formatter are yours to use freely in any personal or commercial project.

Most of the logic runs in client-side JavaScript, so after the initial load you can often keep working without a network connection.

None. Because the SQL Formatter runs in your browser, you can process as many inputs as your hardware allows without API keys or throttling.
